Introduction to Fashion Enterprise Module Evaluation

Introduction to Fashion Enterprise Module Evaluation

To conclude the end of the Introduction to Fashion Enterprise Module, I believe I have gained a lot of knowledge and picked up on certain tips and ideas.

Report writing has became one of my strongest points of progression throughout the module. At the start if the module I felt I had know idea on what a report was and how to write a report. I now feel I am confident to write a report on the subject of my choice.

Being introduced to blogging and the hole updating and posting on my blog has gave me confidence to feel free to post at any time of thing I feel is necessary on the research of topics we have covered within lessons. I have posted a lot of research on my blog to do with a future job role I have in mind - Fashion Buying. I have also posted images of my fashion related work throughout the year so I can look back on. I think the hole idea of having a blog is great and I am glad I had the chance to create one through this module.

Learning about the fashion industry structure and Job roles within the fashion industry was interesting. I learnt hole new possibilities of job roles available and has lead me to a much more open path ways I would like to go down, however Fashion Buying been most closest to heart.

Learning Research Techniques, Marketing Techniques and Communication skills has throughly helped me within all of my modules at uni. I now research more professionally and realise the importance of networking and making contacts in the fashion industry.

Getting taught presentational skills really helped me towards gaining confidence in being able to speak aloud in front of the group. Also having a group discussion on how everyone felt about presenting made me realise everyone gets nervous, even the tutors them selfs still. When it came to presenting my blog I really felt confident and thought I presented well. However at the time I wish I had posted more on their so I had more subjects of conversation to talk about. Doing the Pecha Kucha was ideal, as you were made to talk on the spot just from visual images, this I feel I benefitted from towards presenting.

Learning about the business side of fashion has really gave me more knowledge on setting up a business after uni if I really wanted to. However this is not the route I am wanting to take but am glad I have the knowledge of the background of fashion business.

Fashion ethics was a great subject to cover within fashion enterprise, I learnt all about sustainable fabrics and ethnical ways. Fashion ethics is something I will definitely bare in mind for the future designing.

The CV writing lesson was a lot of fun. Creating a CV that was physically appealing proved to be a lot more fascinating and the reader left remembering you than a plain old black and white boring CV. When writing my CV I will take into consideration making it look much more exciting and visual.

Overall I believe my progression throughout the module has increased a lot. Tutorials throughout the way along the module also helped and encouraged me to keep working on my blog and report. The module has helped me throughly on my knowledge of the background of Fashion, I feel I can finish the end of year 1 of my fashion course being a lot more sure of the understanding of fashion.

Fashion Buying - Telegraph

A Telegraph article I found interesting throughout doing my research into fashion buying

I enjoyed reading what type of things buyers specialise in. Also I found it interesting how
the buyers talked about their target audience, having typical customer
profile to work with. Reading about what influenced them into becoming
fashion buyers is very isprational.

Interveiw with Hayley Hartwell buyer for George Women's Casual Jersey

I also emailed George at Asda, and received interview questions from Hayley Hartwell, buyer for Women's Casual Jersey.

What is the day to day role of a buyer ?
"The role is really varied day to day. On a typical week you cover many things but I will outline our key responsibilities. On Mondays we work with our merchandising team and review our best and worst sellers from the previous week. We look at whether we need to place repeat orders and report back to Senior managers. Buyers are responsible for planning and delivering ranges into store. We plan all ranges with merchandisers and review what worked well last year for us. We build the ranges with the design teams to see what is right for our customer. We then have to negotiate prices with our suppliers to an agreed margin target. . Once we have placed orders we follow the life cycle of that product, including fitting the garments with our garment technologist, we approve fabrics and colours to make sure the final garment looks exactly right."

Why did you want to become a buyer ?
"I worked at George on a placement year as a Visual Merchandiser, whilst I was at university. I really enjoyed working along side the buying teams. Buying is a really varied role, you spend time working across functions and also with suppliers. It is a very hands on role - we spend a lot of time choosing the right product, discussing trends and colours. As well as this we are also challenged on working on costings and budgets which is really challenging also. There is also travel involved in the role and this can be very tiring but rewarding and  you learn a lot."

"What previous past have you had to reach this job and how do you make your way up ?
I did a degree in Fashion and Textile Management. This was at Nottingham Trent, this included a placement year which was really helpful. At school I did A Levels in PE, Biology & English Literature - which is not related at all to what I do now! Within George I have made my way through the business by being open to opportunities and working really hard, but also focusing on my key development areas and learning from others so that I could continuously improve."

What different departments of a buyer is their ?
"Within George there are a lot of different areas. E.g. Within womenswear there are around 10 buyers and we split areas across e.g. there is a Ladies Knitwear buyer, a Ladies Denim buyer etc. this also happens across the Mens, Kids and essentials areas."

What is it you buy and where do you buy the clothing from ?
"I buy Ladies jersey and there are varying country of origins such as Bangladesh, China, india, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Lithuania, Morocco, Egypt, Romania and the UK."

Do you have any communication with shop floor ?
We have a store development team who communicate to the stores regularly including any changes, store layouts etc. As buying teams we undertake store visits regularly to discuss with colleagues and managers what their thoughts are of the ranges and also to talk to customers.
Do you travel much with the job ?
"Depending on the departments you do travel. On my area we work a lot in turkey so we travel at least once every other month."

What qualifications and skills are needed to be a buyer ?
"You need to have a passion for the product. You need to keep up with trends. It is very fast paced so you need to be open to change. you need to be a clear decision maker, and take risks. You have to be a good team worker and trust others to make decisions for you. Communication skills are also imperative as you have to communicate not only within the business but also with suppliers in this country and abroad.
Qualification wise - if you have a degree that is related to fashion this is a good head start but not always necessary. If you can get the experience you can work your way up."

What do you think as for the future of buying ?
"Wherever there is a product needed, you will need a buyer to buy it!"

Topshop interveiw - Junior Buyer - Lucy Russell

For my professional studies module, I have been given a task to write a report a future job role I a, aiming to do - Fashion Buying. I emailed Topshop and Lucy Russell got back to me...

Lucy Russell, junior buyer - Topshop

'In a typical working day I… Review new samples on main range Topshop departments, deciding which are best for the Tall and Petite ranges – we have regular fit sessions where we fit and adapt the garments specifically for Tall and Petite. We also have design and buyers meetings where we brainstorm trends and new ideas. I try to get out and about as much as possible, for some inspirational shopping, blog research and visiting our stores.

The best thing about my job is… Getting to see all of the sketches and ideas become reality. It’s one of the best feelings when a style you’ve been involved with is a bestseller!

My advice to students hoping to crack the fashion industry would be… Aim high, always aspire to be the best with the best. The most successful people I know are happy and love what they do.'
